Forklift Seat Belts - Described in the Regulation guidelines are the use of operative restraints and seatbelts on lift trucks. It states that the responsibility falls on the employers' to ensure that each and every machine, piece of equipment and tool is utilized correctly used in accordance to the instructions of the manufacturer.
Rough Terrain lift trucks have to meet the regulations of ANSI Standard ASME B56.6-1992 with regards to their design, maintenance, inspection, fabrication and use.
Side boom tractors and mobile equipment together with a Rollover Protective Structure, or ROPS for short, should contain seat belts that meet the requirements of the Society of Automotive Engineers, or SAE, Standard J386 JUN93, Operator Restraint System for Off-Road Work Machines. If any mobile machinery includes seat belts required by law, the operator and subsequent passengers need to make sure they use the belts every time the motor vehicle is in motion or engaged in operation because this could cause the machine to become unsteady and hence, unsafe.
If a seat belt or various operator restraint is required on a forklift.
While operating a lift truck, the seat belt requirements would depend on a number of factors. Contributing factors to this determination might include whether the the forklift is outfitted together with a Rollover Protective Structure, the kind of lift truck itself and the year the lift truck was manufactured. The manufacturer's directions and the requirements of the applicable standard are referenced in the Regulation.
Referring to an operator restraint device, enclosure or system, ANSI Standard ASME B56.1-1993 regarding powered industrial trucks, is designed to help the operator in lessening the chance of entrapment of the head and/or torso between the truck and the ground in the event of a tip over. The restraint device or system could consist of a seat belt, although a seat belt is not essentially a part of such device or system.
